Anaemia And Ayurveda - Monday 20 December, 2004 Viewed:2557
Looking pale? Feeling weak and tired? There's a quick blood test available to assess whether anaemia is to blame and if so, whether it's caused by iron-poor blood or something else. Your doctor is the best person to ask about whether certain supplements might be right for you.
What it is?
Anaemia is a condition in which there is a shortage of red cells in the blood or a deficiency of haemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying pigment) in these cells. When anaemia occurs, the body doesn't get enough oxygen and weakness, fatigue result. Although symptoms may not appear? or may be very mild?for a long time, the condition can be life-threatening if it is left undiagnosed and untreated. Should you suspect you are anaemic, it's essential that you see your doctor promptly to ascertain the underlying cause. Treatment will vary, depending on the diagnosis.
What causes it?
Iron deficiency, the most common cause of anaemia, usually results from a gradual, prolonged blood loss, which depletes the body's iron stores. Without enough iron, haemoglobin levels fall. Menstruating women, particularly those with heavy periods, are prone to iron-deficiency anaemia.
However, men and women can develop iron deficiency from any condition that causes slow bleeding?including long-term haemorrhoids, rectal polyps, or ulcers; stomach or colon cancer; or prolonged use of aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAlDs), such as ibuprofen.
Because so many foods are fortified with iron, iron-deficiency anaemia can rarely be attributed to a lack of this mineral in the diet.

How supplements can help?
Before taking supplements, you need to determine the underlying cause of your anaemia. It's especially important to see a doctor about iron-deficiency anaemia, which may be caused by internal bleeding. If you're advised to take supplements, have blood work every month to see if they are worthwhile. If iron-deficiency anaemia is diagnosed, the mineral iron combined with vitamin C may be of value. Iron is a key component of haemoglobin and vitamin C helps the body absorb the mineral. Take iron only under your doctor's supervision, because too much can be dangerous. Various herbs may also be useful. Yellow dock has modest amounts of iron, but it's well absorbed and can raise blood iron levels. Other iron- rich herbs include seaweed and dulse. Taken as a tincture juice or tea some herbs (dandelion, burdock, mint, and linden flowers) may enhance the body's ability to absorb iron from foods or supplements.

Chronical Diseases:Acne And Ayurveda - Monday 20 December, 2004 Viewed:1768
Since Ayurveda is a holistic and natural system of healing, it is only to be expected that the simplest and most common-place of items shall be used as ingredients for creating some very easy-to-make but most effective cures for and preventives against day-to-day ailments. Ayurveda thus offers a unique blend of science and philosophy that balances the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual components necessary for holistic health.
Acne And Ayurveda
Acne
Although most people associate acne with the trying teen years, it can actually erupt at any age. Indeed, up to 8% of those who had clear skin in their youth develop acne as adults.
Fortunately, there are a variety of ways to control out-breaks?no matter how old you are when they occur.

What it is?
Pimples and other skin eruptions are the hallmark of acne, a sometimes chronic condition of the face, back, chest, neck, shoulders, and other areas of the body. The most common form (acne vulgaris) encompasses blackheads, white heads, and raised red blemishes with semisolid centers.
In severe cases (cystic acne), clusters of painful, fluid-filled cysts or firm, painless lumps appear beneath the skin's surface; both can lead to unsightly permanent pitting and scarring. For teenagers especially, acne can be an embarrassing and emotionally difficult condition.
What causes it?
Acne occurs when the sebaceous glands at the base of the hair follicles of the skin secrete too much sebum. This thick, oily substance is normally released from the pores to keep the skin lubricated and healthy. If the sebum backs up, it can form hard plugs that block the pores and cause pimples. Should one of these oil plugs rupture beneath the skin's surface, a localized bacterial infection can develop.
Hormonal imbalances can lead to an overproduction of sebum a common problem during adolescence, especially in boys. In women, menstrual periods or pregnancy can also create acne-producing hormonal disturbances. Other acne triggers include emotional stress, the friction or rubbing of clothing against the skin, and certain medications, particularly steroids, contraceptives, or drugs that affect hormone levels. Heredity may play a role as well.
Contrary to popular belief, acne is rarely caused by eating chocolate, shellfish, nuts, or fatty snacks or by drinking colas. Still, some doctors?and patients?contend that acne can be brought on or aggravated by certain foods or food allergies.
How supplements can help?
Most people will benefit from trying all of the supplements that are recommended in the chart; they can be safely combined. It often takes three to four weeks, or longer, to notice results. All can be used long term, as well as with conventional acne medications.
Vitamin A is important because it plays a role in controlling over-production of sebum, the root cause of acne. Because it aids in balancing levels of acne-related hormones, vitamin 85 may be useful for acne aggravated by menstrual cycles or menopause. And vitamin C promotes immune system health, helping to keep acne-causing bacteria in check.
Taken with any or all of these vitamins, zinc enhances immune function, reduces inflammation, and promotes healthy hormone levels. Because long-term use of zinc inhibits copper absorption, it should be taken with that mineral.

Out of these, the first and the second pertain to physical and mental disorders respectively while the third one is resorted to when the above two fail altogether. Among them, the rational medicine prevails as this therapy is based on rationality. Some recommend simultaneous use of all the three on the levels of body, mind and soul which brings about perfect recovery.

Herbal Medicines
Herbal Medicines And Human Body
The use of plant remedies to strengthen weakened body systems, control symptoms, and boost the bodies owns healing powers is perhaps the oldest form of medicine. Herbalists maintain that the natural balance of compounds in plants provides a more effective means of restoring health than synthesized, single-ingredient drugs, as prescribed in orthodox modern medicine.

No one knows how or when people realized that plants could be used to treat disease, but herbal medicine probably developed from the use of plants as foods, partly by a system of trial and error, and parody from knowledge gained by people living close to nature that has been handed down through the generations. With the development of science, it become possible to isolate plant compounds and to fire out which chemicals in a plant have particular actions. These chemicals were duplicated in laboratories to produce what we now regard orthodox medicines. Work by medic researchers has given herbalists a wider understanding of why herbs have particular effects on the body. But this insight has not changed the way herbalists work.

Herbalists have always believed, and continue to believe, that using whole plants, which contain a huge variety of compounds, is the idleway to help strengthen the body's healing povers and to help restore any imbalances within the body. Although a plant may be chosen primary]for the action of one ingredient, the other con-pounds in the plant?or in several plants in combination remedy?may limit or enhance the main action, prevent side effects, or act in a generally nutritive way. Some herbal products contain several active compounds in an extract from the whole plant. Others contain only one or two compounds that have been isolated from the plant. A standardized extract contains know amounts of one or more active compounds.

USING THIS THERAPY AT HOME
Medicinal herbs lend themselves well to home use, and many of them are easy and fun to grow in your backyard or window box. However, it is important to recognize that they are medicines some can be taken safely in large amounts; others cannot. Never consume an herb unless you are absolutely sure that you have identified it correctly.

Yoga

Yoga And Human Body
Yoga is an ancient insight of India, advocate as a way of life, a focus on psychosomatic development for spiritual upliftment. Yoga influence almost all aspect of life i.e. food, nutrition, metabolism, physical, and social habits, emotional attitude etc. These broad spectrums of influences; Yoga becomes invaluable property in present era.

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yugira' meaning to unite, to combine or to join together and thus may be taken to mean a state of union of the individual soul with the supreme soul or total integration of physical, mental and spiritual facet of human being.

Patanjali has been described yoga in his text Yogasutra through 'Astangyoga'. He described eight steps of Yoga namely ?

1. Yama ? Abstinence
2. Niyama ? Cultivation of Good Habits
3. Asana ? Physical Exercises
4. Pranayama ? Breathing Exercises
5. Pratyahara ? Sensory Withdrawal
6. Dharana ? Concentration
7. Dhyana ? Meditation
8. Samadhi ? Trance State

These eight steps, though in themselves are comprehensive procedures of physical and mental progress, they individually form only a step in the practice of Yoga in real sense

In Charaka?s words the phenomenon of Yoga is described as follows:-
"The apparatus of sensation is the mind and the body together with senseorgans, with the exception of hair of the head and the body, the tips of the nails, the indigested food, faeces, excretory fluids an sense-objects."

"Both in Yoga and final liberation, there is no existence of sensation; in final liberation there is absolute cessation, while Yoga leads to that liberation."

"From the contact of the self, the senses, the mind and the sense objects arise pleasure and pain; these two cease to be, as the result of inaction of the mind which is firmly fixed in the Self. Then while embodied, it acquires the psychic powers; and such a state, the Rishis who are conversant with Yoga know to be Yoga."

"The entry into other bodies, telepathy, the doing things according to one?s will, clairvoyance, clairaudience omniscience, effulgence, vanishing from sight at will - these eight are said to be the sovereign powers of the Yogis. All these accrue from the concentration of the pure mind."

Summing up what has been stated above, it will be seen that apart from the fact that the mind possesses dual properties viz., (i) It functions through the five senses under normal circumstances of life and the scope of such operations being limited by Time and Space factors; and (ii) When freed from the senses in special states cultivated by stern discipline and assiduous practice, it transcends all limitations and is able to perceive the true nature of things which are stated to be ?revelations?. It may incidentally be noted here that the basic concepts of Ayurveda, the Doctrine of Panchabhutas, are claimed to be the outcome of such revelations.

Meditation
Meditation And Human Body
Meditation is a continuous flow of perception or thought, just like the flow of water in a river. A practice where there is constant observation of the mind, meditation brings awareness, harmony and natural order into life. It helps you dig deep into your inner self to discover the wisdom and tranquility that lie within.

Principles of Meditation
The basic points to be kept in mind in practicing meditation are :
? Have a special place and specific time for meditation. Try doing it daily.
? Choose a time when your mind is not clouded with worries.
? Sit up straight with your back, neck and head in one line. Facing north or east.
? Condition your mind such so as to remain quiet for the duration of your meditation session.
? Regulate your breathing. Start with 5 minutes of deep breathing. Then gradually slow it down.
? Follow a rhythmic breathing pattern - inhale and exhale.
? Initially let your mind wander. It grows more restless if you force to concentrate.
? Then slowly bring it to rest on the focal point of your choice.
? Hold your object of concentration at this focal point throughout your session.
? Meditation happens when you reach a state of pure thought. Even while retaining an awareness of duel self.
Followed diligently you will soon be able to attain a super-conscious state.

Tips on Concentration
? At the outset, it is hard to keep your attention to keep focussed on one object.
? So it is better to start off by limiting your field of concentration to a category of objects.
? Choose your objects with care e.g. any four flowers, fruits, trees...etc. You must feel at ease with what you choose.
? After concentrating on one, you can move on to the next, if & when your mind starts wandering.
This style of meditative exercise will help you control your mind down to a finer focus, teaching you the principle of single point concentration.

Massage
Massage And Human Body
The Ayurvedic full-body self-massage, called "Abhyanga," is traditionally performed everyday for overall mind/body support. However, Ayurvedic texts discuss other ways to use massage therapy in addition to the basic oil massage. Here are some of them:

The Warm Oil Scalp Massage:
Massaging the scalp and hair is recommended to stimulate the scalp, nourish the hair roots and hair, relieve mental fatigue, help enhance mental clarity and focus and balance and nourish the emotions. Traditional oils for this purpose have beneficial herbal extracts combined with the base oil for added benefit. Some herbs are included for their beneficial impact on hair health and growth and some for their balancing effect on the mind and emotions or their stimulating effect on the mind and nervous system. Brahmi is famous in Ayurveda as a "Medhya" herb - it can help improve focus and calm the mind, promote a better quality of sleep, enhance memory, balance the emotions and help withstand the effects of day-to-day stress. Brahmi is extensively used both in supplements as well as in topical hair oils. Other ayurvedic herbs frequently found in herbal hair oils include Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Bhringaraj (Eclipta Alba) -- literally "King of Tresses," Tulasi (Holy Basil), Ashwagandha (Winter Cherry), Sandalwood and Hibiscus. The base oil is generally sesame, which is reported to have antioxidant properties, or coconut.

How it's done-- Gently warm a couple of teaspoons of the oil. Persons with longer hair may need more, to cover all the hair as well as the scalp. The oil should be warm enough to be soothing, not uncomfortably hot. Pour the oil on your palm and apply it evenly all over the scalp and the back of the neck close to the hairline. Using your fingertips, gently massage the oil into the scalp, working the oil in for about 4-5 minutes. Ideally the oil should be left on overnight (use a shower cap to protect your bed-linens) and shampooed off the next morning. If leaving it on overnight is impractical for you, leave it on for 2-3 hours, then shampoo your hair well to rinse it off. Do the massage at least two or three times each week.

Massage to Promote Better Sleep:
Sleep imbalances, according to Ayurveda, occur when one or more of the three ayurvedic principles of Vata, Pitta or Kapha is out of the balance. Massage is one of the techniques recommended to restore balance and aid the process of getting an adequate amount of rejuvenating rest. This massage is performed on the peripheries to improve circulation and relax the mind and body. Massage oils for this purpose combine herbs and essential oils with a base oil.

How it's done-- Apply the massage oil to the lower arms, hands, lower legs and feet a few minutes before bed and gently massage into the skin. Pay special attention to the soles of the feet and the nail-beds of the hands and feet. Pat off any excess oil with a clean cloth.

Dry Garshana Massage:
The Garshana massage is done without oil. Performed regularly, it is reported to gradually help break down fat deposits by enhancing blood and lymphatic circulation. This massage helps clean and exfoliate the skin, making it more receptive to herbs and therapeutic oils.
How it's done -- Wearing raw silk gloves available for the purpose, use light vigorous strokes to perform the Garshana massage. This massage can be done everyday.

Philosophy Of Ayurveda - Monday 20 December, 2004 Viewed:1552
Philosophy can be classified under the following three broad headings viz.
i. The Natural Philosophy - Physics, Chemistry, etc.
ii. Mental Philosophy - Meta-physics etc.,
iii. Moral Philosophy - Ethics, etc.
Natural, Mental And Moral Philosophy
In the great-enlightened Golden age called the Vedic age which traces its roots 5000 year back, spirituality permeated the life. In this system we can recognize 4 levels of knowledge i.e. the knowledge on: the physical body (which is composed of matter); the astral body (of thoughts and emotions); the causal body (the reincarnating entity) and the universal spirit.

Philosophy & Phenomena of Ayurveda
The basic doctrine on which the Ayurvedic conception of physiology, pathology, pharmacology, medicine and therapeutics are founded is known as the Doctrine of Panchabhutas. This doctrine has been expounded, among others, by the Shad-Darsanas of the sic philosophical systems of India. Of these, Ayurveda has largely relied on the Nyaya-Vaiseshika and Sankhya-Yoga Systems.

It has to be observed that the term philosophy used here should not be confused with religion, as is generally the case. Ordinarily, this term has often been confused with the supernatural and the superstitious. On the other hand, it has been understood and used in the past as in the present, to signify, "the science which aims at the explanation of all phenomena of the universe by ultimate causes," and "as the science which aims at an explanation of all phenomena as explained by and resolved into causes and effects." The term phenomenon used here means, "the form through which, it becomes known to the senses or understanding.

In the context of Ayurveda or the Science of Life or Knowledge of Life, the term philosophy comprehends all these three categories which, between them, seek to elucidate and explain the phenomenon of life and life process and lay down the laws and principles that govern them. The Shad-Darsanas claim to have sought for and ascertained the ultimate causes relating to life and life process in terms of causes and effects and enunciate the laws and principles that govern them. The term Darsana which is derived from the root ?Dris,? means "to see" "seeing," "looking" or "sight."

In order that we may not mix up these philosophical systems with religion, supernatural and superstitious, it may be noted here, that these systems include the materialistic or atheistic philosophy of the Charvakas - the Charvaka Darsanas. The Charvakas, while denying the existence of God or a Creator, held that every aspect of the phenomena of the universe including life was the result of the combination of the atomic particles. For that matter, the Sankhya system is of two kinds viz., the Seswara Sankhya and Niriswara Sankhya. Whatever the difference between one system and another, all of them are material basis of the phenomenal universe and every thing included in it.

Aim of Ayurveda - Monday 20 December, 2004 Viewed:1542
The aim of Ayurveda is to give complete health and not just relieve us from physical diseases.
The aim of Ayurveda is to give complete health and not just relieve us from physical diseases. So to become completely healthy one needs to know each and every part of him including mind and soul. Ayurveda aims at making a happy, healthy and peaceful society.

Two of the most important aims of Ayurveda are:
- To maintain the health of healthy persons.
- To cure the diseases of sick people.

One part of Ayurveda deals only with maintaining health. The word health here does not mean only physical health but also spiritual and mental health. People may not have any physical problem but still may not be feeling happy or comfortable. Problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness and insomnia from which most of us are suffering to some extent, mainly originate due to a sick mind and soul.

Unfortunately, most of our activities in the modern world through which we strive of happiness and peace are related to the physical body and materialism only. We never, or rarely, pay any attention to the other half which is equally important, i.e., the mind and the soul.

To many of us, these words might sound outdated or of no use in modern society. But they are responsible for a half of our health. Our actions, foods and life styles which we follow to achieve happiness and peace may not be healthy to our mind and soul. That is why, in spite of following the best health rules and taking all precautions, we are not happy and peaceful.
Most of the time, we feel anxious, depressed and insecure. Why then are we following those guidelines?

It is because no one has ever taught us about the other half of our life. We normally do something, whatever it may be, to find enjoyment, happiness and peace. And we put in our best efforts and resources to achieve this. But we are not able to achieve it even after our best endeavour. This indicates that there is something wrong in our approach or something is missing somewhere. What is that something? It is our mind and soul. We simply can't ignore this important aspect of our health. The mind and the soul require equal attention as does our body. All through our life we make all possible efforts to have our body be happy and comfortable. Our habits or emotions like anger, greed, passion, attachment, jealousy, Lack of concern for other creatures, lying, disrespecting of elders, narrow mindedness and selfishness are unhealthy for us. We may not realize this but they are the cause of most of our mental problems.

What can we do? Ayurveda is the perfect answer to this question. It helps us in understanding each individual at a very subtle, personal level and gives us a detailed protocol for diet, daily routines and activities to be followed. It teaches how to live in society and in the universe without disturbing the natural balance.

Yes and / or No. There are hundreds of varieties of cancer. We do not as yet know the exact cause of many of the varieties of cancer and hence it is very difficult to varify a cure for several of them. However if the cancer is detected in its early stage, then many Ayurvedic procedures and herbs as well as other herbo-mineral products can curtail the advancement of cancer. Similarly some special herbs in the group of Rasayana are very useful in treating cancer, as their use prolongs the quality of life of cancer patients by reducing pain and other discomforts.

Does Ayurvedic treatment take a long time to heal ailments? - Tuesday 28 September, 2004 Viewed:1610
No. This is a common misconception about Ayurveda. In reality the time to heal any ailment depends on various factors- age of the patient, type of the disease, whether it is acute or chronic, how many doshas, tissues, organs and channels are involved in the disease process. If the disease is newly formed and is with a single dosha and tissue involvement, then Ayurveda can cure such a disease very quickly. On the other hand if the disease is formed with the aggravation of two or three doshas, and if more organs and channels are involved, then naturally, the treatment takes long time to cure this disease.

Do I have to be a vegetarian to follow an Ayurvedic lifestyle? - Tuesday 28 September, 2004 Viewed:1507
Classical Ayurvedic texts describe three types of foods - Sattvic, Rajasic and Tamasic. Sattvic foods consist of fresh, energizing foods such as leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, milk, yogurt, butter, honey and others. According to Ayurveda, Sattvic foods are recommended for everyone. Rajasic foods consist of hot and pungent foods such as meat, beans, chilies and so on. A diet which includes more Rajasic foods is considered suitable only for those who engage in heavy physical work. Finally, a Tamasic diet includes fermented and highly processed foods, stale or old foods, and alcoholic drinks. A Tamasic diet is considered to be harmful to health. Ayurveda lays emphasis on diet and lifestyle routines for optimum health, and therefore, Sattvic food, moderate physical exercise, exposure to fresh air and sunlight are all recommended.
